October 2026

· @Stephanie Mann

October is the Triangle's busiest month, and 2026 stacks it high: free downtown music, the State Fair, a three-night Good Moon in Durham, Diwali in Cary, and a Halloween that lands on a Saturday.

This issue rounds up what's happening across Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and the surrounding towns from Thursday, October 1 through Saturday, October 31. Two quick heads-ups before you start marking your calendar. October 1 falls on a Thursday this year, so most Saturday events sit a day or two later than you might remember. And the State Fair runs October 15 to 25, a week earlier than last year.

Dates and lineups can shift, so double-check with the organizer before you head out.

This month's top 5

If you only make it to a handful of things this month, make it these.

  1. Raleigh Wide Open, Oct 1–3, downtown Raleigh (free). Three days of roots, bluegrass and Americana across downtown stages, now organized by PineCone. Jim Lauderdale and the Fairfield Four are on the 2026 bill.
  2. Good Moon Festival, Oct 8–10, downtown Durham. Sylvan Esso's festival returns with two DPAC headlining nights from the band and one from Tyler Childers, plus afterparties at The Pinhook, Boom Club and Bay 7.
  3. Hum Sub Diwali, Sat Oct 10, Koka Booth Amphitheatre, Cary (free, $10 parking). A full day of dance, music, food and shopping that ends with fireworks.
  4. N.C. State Fair, Oct 15–25, State Fairgrounds, Raleigh. Eleven days of rides, livestock, deep-fried everything and free concerts.
  5. Pumpkin Flotilla, Fri Oct 23, Bond Park, Cary (free). Glowing jack-o'-lanterns float across Bond Lake at dusk. It's one of the prettiest evenings of the year.

Kickoff weekend: Oct 1–4

The big one: N.C. State Fair, Oct 15–25

The N.C. State Fair runs Thursday, October 15 through Sunday, October 25 at the State Fairgrounds on Blue Ridge Road in west Raleigh. Last year drew 946,811 people over 11 days, so plan ahead.

  • Hours: Opening day (Oct 15) runs noon to 11pm. Fridays and Saturdays run 9am to 11:30pm; all other days 9am to 11pm.
  • Late arrivals, beware: Ticket booths and re-entry close at 9:45pm, even though the midway keeps spinning later.
  • Discount days: Oct 15 is Wolf Pack Day for NC State students, and Tuesday, Oct 20 is Senior Citizens Day.
  • Tickets: Check ncstatefair.org for 2026 gate prices.

My tip: go on a weekday afternoon, eat something you'd never admit to, and stay for the nightly fireworks.
